New AP Bureau is staffed by 6 multiformat journalists
The Associated Press has opened a bureau in Yangon, Myanmar (also known as Burma), the first international news agency permitted to operate full time in the country, which has relaxed its longtime restrictions on media amid a wave of democratic reforms.
Six multiformat journalists will staff the new AP bureau. Among them is Aye Aye Win, an award-winning correspondent who has reported from her native country for the AP since 1989. She took over the job from another AP veteran — her father, U Sein Win — who had covered the country for AP for 20 years and who was jailed by a previous government. Aye Aye Win was honored for courage in 2008 by the International Women’s Media Foundation.
Senior Vice President and Executive Editor Kathleen Carroll said: “We take great pride in our independent and impartial reporting, and coverage of Myanmar has been a priority for many years. A full-time, multimedia bureau staffed by talented local and international journalists will enable AP to provide even more coverage of the historic changes underway.”
People: Sandy MacIntyre now AP director of global video news
Associated Press announced today the promotion of international video chief Sandy MacIntyre to director of global video news. Sandy will be responsible for the newsgathering and production of 250 video journalists worldwide and 50 others who contribute to the video report.
AP say: As the top video news executive for AP, MacIntyre will oversee the video operation’s two hubs, in Washington and London. In addition, he’ll be the lead liaison with AP’s video product owners and an important face of the AP with video customers around the globe.
His promotion was announced today by Senior Vice President and Executive Editor Kathleen Carroll.
“Sandy’s excellent leadership of the international video news operation is well known _ indeed, legendary,” Carroll said in a memo to staff. “He has been a force for competitive, compelling video news since he helped forge AP’s entry into television in 1994.”
For a decade prior, at UK broadcaster ITN, he ran daily foreign news coverage and spent considerable time in the world’s trouble spots, including the Mideast and the killing fields of the former Yugoslavia. He’s also directed coverage of six Olympic Games and six World Cups.
Most recently, as AP’s director of international video news, MacIntyre led the news portion of a sweeping, digital transformation that upgraded AP’s worldwide video production, newsgathering and distribution to high definition.
